I must agree with others who feel that posting a reume to Museum-L is not
the best tactic in one's job search. Many institutions may simply ignore or
delete such posts. As well, few institutions have the time and resources to
pursue job seekers who have not expressed their interest in a position or
an institution specifically. At worst, broadcast resumes may so annoy an
individual who is in a hiring position that he or she may effectively
blackball the job seeker at that institution.

The list can be a very effective tool in one's job search if used properly.
This includes monitoring the list for pertinent job postings, and
responding *directly* to the poster, rather than to the entire list, with
any questions or comments. Museum-L can also be a good networking tool,
encouraging far-flung museum professionals to become acquainted with one
another. It can also be a good way to learn about the institutions with
which list members are affiliated. Should someone be interested in more
information about an institution, or whether positions are available, he or
she can contact the list member or the institution directly.

On April 17, I posted some suggestions for list etiquette which I drew from
comments and requests made to the list over the last year or so. I will not
repeat it here, as it is available in the archives at

The gist of it, though, was stated at the bottom: "Overall, just keep in
mind that your colleagues are as busy as you are, and anything you can do
to lessen the amount of garbage they have to sift through will be
appreciated!" Although you may not consider your resume garbage, the other
2000 members of Museum-L may.

Good luck to all who are searching!
