This is my first entry onto the list, but I have been a silent observer for
the past couple months. I work as Director of Interpretation for the
Baltimore City Life Museums, and we are now in the process of planning
interpretive spaces for a new building to open in Fall 1995. Those spaces
include: one core (where we will incorporate a variety of living history and
dramatic perfomance spaces); two temporary exhibit spaces, a computer gallery,
an orientation theater, and two hands-on gallery spaces.

Currently I am trying to gather some information for our Hands-on Galleries
with about 1500 square feet. Are there any of you out there who have
expertise, experience, relevant articles and/or opinions that you might share
with us as we plan our spaces. We would be particluarly interested in the
following information:

        1. Particulary effective hands-on galleries you would recommend that
        you have seen.
        2. Museum people and designers whom you might refer us to for further
        information/consultation.
        3. Specific recommendtions from your experience concerning space, noise
        control, storage, security, staffing.
        4. Budgetary considerations.
        5. Importance of peer review and marketing research.

If you have any comments/suggestions we would appreciate your help.
