In regard to your question about CMS for botanical
          collections.

First of all, for garden collections (ie living
collections), the most established software is something
called BG-BASE, which is an Advanced Revelation application.
It might be a bit of overkill for a small collection, but we
are using it with some success here at the New York
Botanical Garden. It might be worth looking at even if you
want to make a smaller system. Where I worked previously, at
a small botanical garden called Wave Hill, I made small
database system using Alpha 4. I don't know what's become of
          it.

For managing other botanical collections, specifically the
herbarium, we are using another Advanced Revelation
Application called HUHpca, developed by the Harvard
University Herbaria, until we have completed the development
of a UNIX type system. I haven't spent much time with HUHpc.

I can put you in touch with the people who really know
these things here at the Garden if you are interested. Send
me private email, and I'll give you my phone, etc.
