CALL FOR PAPERS

Through the Eye of the Needle:
New Perspectives on New York Sewing

In conjunction with the exhibition Home Sewn (November 18, 2003 ? April
18, 2004), the New-York Historical Society will be hosting a symposium
to showcase new scholarship in textile history and related fields.  The
exhibition will explore domestic sewing in New York from the eighteenth
century to the present and will be accompanied by public programs
embracing a broad range of related topics.  Students currently enrolled
and recently graduated from M.A. and Ph.D. programs in costume or
textile history, decorative arts, American studies, or related fields
are encouraged to submit proposals.

Possible topics include: schoolgirl samplers; quilts and quiltmaking;
mercantile trade and availability of textiles; dressmaking; New York
City’s garment industry; ethnic or religious expression in sewing;
tenement sewing and the reform movement; technology and textile
production; knitting or sewing for war efforts; and the internet, web
logs, and 21st-century sewing.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is October 30, 2003. Completed
papers, due March 1, 2004 will be reviewed by a panel of curators and
historians.  One paper will be nominated for publication in the spring
2004 issue of the Historical Society’s journal, The New York Journal of
American History.
