A future issue of NAME's journal, The Exhibitionist, will deal with many aspects (and examples) of
RFPs.

During the course of editing the question of the origin of RFPs has come up.

Can anyone point to concrete information about the origin of the RFP practice?
(Either in general, or particularly related to museums.)

Any specific leads would be greatly appreciated.
