Freeze it. Seal it inside two zip-top bags and freeze it overnight. You can keep it in the freezer a few more days if you want to be safe, but Tom Parker, the subject expert, reportedly says several hours is fine and the type of freezer isn't critical. When you take it out of the freezer, keep it zipped up in the bags until the hat has returned to room temperature. Then carefully remove the dead bug carcasses.

Freezing will not harm the fur hat, and is much cheaper and safer than other methods for this type of object.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] fur infestation

Hi, listers, we have a ca. 1955 fur hat worn by an important local woman. The hat came to us infested with carpet beetles. Can we freeze this object to kill the pests, or will this method damage the fur? What is the best method for fumigating fur? Thank you for any help you can give us. Stephanie Turnham
