When Pittsburgh's original Buhl Planetarium and
Institute of Popular Science operated [1939-1991], it
normally opened at 1:00 p.m. on Sundays. During our
seasonal [November through February] display of the
very popular Miniature Railroad and Village, the start
time was extended to 11:00 a.m.

Sunday was often the BUSIEST day of the week for Buhl
Planetarium. Closing on Sundays would be a mistake.
Tuesday, or possibly, Wednesday are better days to
close, as, for Buhl Planetarium, these were the least
busy days of the week.

Remember, that there are several Federal holidays
which fall on a Monday. Hence, you want to be open to
take advantage of times people would be able to
attend.

Each year, I would obtain the schedules of all area
school districts [City school district, Diocese school
district, and all of the other suburban school
districts in the County through the local district
Intermediate Unit], to find out when most school
districts observed holidays and other non-school days.
You may want to check with your area school districts
for their annual schedules.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Off season hours
To: [log in to unmask]

We are setting our 2006 calander now, and I need some
input on off season hours. Traditionally, we are open
mon - sat 10-5, sun 1-5, except for major holidays and
January, when we are closed to the public. In the
interest of cutting costs, it has been suggested we
close Sundays in the off-season (November - February).
The management team also thinks it could be to our
advantage to extend our peak hours in the summer to
10-6, with Sunday becoming 10-5. Some on staff feel
the Sunday extension could backfire becuase of Church
services. Could you please share your thoughts on
this. We haven't surveyed our public yet, but I
thought getting input from the professionals on the
list would help. Thanks,

Richard Fields
