The decision to exhibit this piece, and then to market it as being
offensive, demonstrates in my view extremely poor professional judgment on
the part of the museum staff or board, or both.

Whether or not the mayor acted is immaterial, and of course, his withholding
of funds is inappropriate and perhaps illegal.  With the "rights" we enjoy,
come the responsibility to use them wisely.  I do not see the wisdom in the
Brooklyn museum's course of action.

The Brooklyn Museum of Art has, as a result of its marketing ploy, invited
politicians and philanthropists all over the U.S. to revive their suspicions
about cultural institutions and those who staff them.  We are being
escorted, thanks to the promotion of elephant dung, back to the Jesse Helms
days, in my humble opinion.
