FINE ART PACKER

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts seeks a full-time fine art packer to
design and build crates and boxes for the museum's collections according
to accepted museum standards and practices.  Responsibilities include
art packing/unpacking, collection and delivery of art, and maintenance
of records and schedule.  Will also act as an exhibition installation
technician on occasion.  Qualifications include B.A. degree and 2 years
experience in the design/construction of crates, and art-handling
experience of two and three dimensional works of art in museum,
commercial gallery or fine arts packing company.  Candidates meeting

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Job Title:      FINE ART PACKER/exhibition technician
Department:     Registration
Accountable to: Registrar
Job purpose:    Responsible for crate and box building and art packing and
unpacking for works of art withoin the museum and without according to
accepted museum standards;  handle art and keep records for art entering
and leaving transitional storage areas

Major Job Responsibilities:

(30%) 1. Design and construct shipping crates and boxes, and pack and
prepare for shipment all outgoing works of art from the permanent and
loan collections; with the appropriate registrar determine proper
packing materials to ensure safe and handling and shipping; provide
packing/unpacking istructions; record weights and dimensions; act as a
courier as needed.

(20%)  2.  Unpack incoming works of art; prepare and maintain packing
notes for each object; move art to appropriate storage area; save and
store packing materials and crates as appropriate; works with registrars
in overseeing the packing/unpacking of exhibitions as needed.

(5%)   3.  Maintain an inventory of crates and packing materials; order
supplies as needed; with the appropriate registrar generate and maintain
financial accounts for crate construction and packing.

(7.5%) 4.  Maintain safe and accessible organization and records of
artwork in transitional storage areas.

(7.5%) 5.  Delever and collect works of art by truck, both locally and
interstate.

(5%)   6.  Create schedules with appropriate registrar to meet all
incoming and outgoing transit deadlines.

(2.5%) 7.  Participate in budget planning process related to packing
requirements for exhibitions and loans.

(2.5%) 8.  Research and keep current on packing materials and standards
in order to ensure a safe environment for art in transit.

(5%)   9.  Maintain shop space and tools used for building and packing.

(10%) 10.  Acts as an art exhibition installation technician as nneded.

(5%)  11.  As nneded, performs other duties relating to the job
description.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:      B.A. in studio art or equilvalent combination of education
and experience.

Skills/Experience:      Two years design construction of crates and
art-handling experience in museum, commersial gallery or fine arts
shipping company; knowledge of works of art and how to move them;
carpentry skills.

Other qualifications:  Excellent organization and attention to detail;
good manual dexterity; ability to stand for long periods of time;
ability to lift 50 lbs. (will be required to lift heavier weights with
the assitance of lifting equipment and/or staff); ability to work
independently or as part of a team.

Equipment operated:     Hand and power tools, shop machines, forklift, power
hi-jack, pallet truck, van and rental trucks (to 24 feet), computer.
