Yes, please DO talk to them, however old they are.

This summer, I took my grandson and step-grandson to
Sutter's Fort in Sacramento, CA. It was a place I had
visited as a child, and a place I had taken my two
children.

This time, it meant a lot more to me. The workers
they have there were dressed in costume from the time,
and engaged in reenactments of some of the events of
the era. There was a smithy, a mill, an office, and
others.

These workers were wonderful. They spoke to the small
boys, and it made such an impression on them. They
really liked turning the mill. They were afraid, at
first, of the smithy, after all, he looked so
intimidating. But, when we initiated discussion, the
boys had lots of questions.

As fate would have it, there was a show on public
television here last night called California's Gold,
with Huell Howser. It's a show I enjoy watching often
as I can. It started out with scenes from Sutter's
Fort. Though my grandson is but four, he recognized
it right away, and thought back to the time we were
there in June. It was nice to know our visit made an
impression.
