POSITION AVAILABLE:  Preparator for Exhibitions and Collections

CRANBROOK ART MUSEUM

Cranbrook Art Museum is a rapidly growing contemporary art museum
affiliated with Cranbrook Educational Community, including the graduate art
school Cranbrook Academy of Art.  The community is recognized
internationally for its programs, collections, architecture, grounds and
sculpture.

Working closely with the registrar and curators and supervising student
assistants, the preparator is responsible for the preparation of the
galleries and objects for exhibition, installing and deinstalling temporary
exhibitions and the permanent collection, and assisting the registrar with
the transportation and physical care of collections and loans.

Cranbrook's collections, including the recently restored 1930 Saarinen
House, emphasize 20th-century arts, crafts, architecture and design. 
Temporary exhibitions explore new and emerging artistic forms and ideas by
regional, national and international artists.

Ideal candidate will have Bachelors degree; broad construction and
woodworking skills; knowledge of art handling techniques and exhibition
practices; ability to lift 70 pounds, work on ladders, operate power
equipment and drive medium-size truck; basic computer skills; interest in
contemporary art; two years of museum/gallery experience; and desire to
work collaboratively in a dynamic and evolving environment.  Salary: 
$23-25,000 with excellent benefits.  Starts summer 1998.
