Position Title: Museum Editor (Full-time, State Funded)

Work Location: Illinois State Museum, 502 S. Spring St., Springfield, IL

Job Description: The Museum Editor has overall responsibility for the 
Museum's technical and non-technical serial publications, e.g. the 
Living Museum, Handbook of Collections, Reports of Investigations, and 
Scientific Papers. The Editor is responsible for development and/or 
editing of printed or electronic publications and other products (e.g. 
exhibition and educational guides and catalogs, rack cards, brochures, 
exhibit labels,  and text for the Museum's Web site). He/she establishes 
schedules to meet publication and other deadlines; oversees editorial 
assistant(s); compiles materials for printed and electronic 
publications, does content, technical, and copy editing; writes material 
if needed; and conceptualizes design and layout for printed and 
electronic materials. The Museum editor oversees all phases of 
publication from editing through development of technical specifications 
for printing, working with State agencies to procure printing services, 
and working with printers. The Editor may coordinate details associated 
with publications distribution or perform other duties as assigned by 
the Museum Director or her designees.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or another 
discipline requiring excellent writing skills required; Master's degree 
preferred. Training and/or knowledge of print and electronic media and 
related hardware and software for desktop publishing required. Position 
requires a creative individual with ability to conceive, develop and 
implement a program to inform the public concerning the activities and 
projects of a major multi-disciplinary museum of art, anthropology, and 
natural history. Educational background in and or knowledge of 
disciplines relevant to the Museum (e.g. art anthropology, history, 
geology, botany, zoology) preferred. Candidates should have at least 
five years of progressively responsible experience in editing, writing, 
and production in a museum or a comparable institution. Excellent 
organizational, verbal and written communication, content and copy 
editing, and design and layout skills are essential. Ability to maintain 
good interpersonal relations also required.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
