Sue-
I don't profess to be an expert in this, but I believe you are fine as long
as...
1) The furniture is outside of your mission, scope or collections plan
2) The donor understands that the pieces are being donated for auction at a
fundraising event
3) You do not accession the objects into your collection
4) All paperwork (Gift Forms, tax forms, Receipts, etc) that you fill out
regarding the donation, has that this was accepted as an unrelated gift for
the purpose of selling it to support the museum and was never intended for
the museum collection.

I would suggest that you look at "A Legal Primer on Managing Museum
Collections" by Marie C. Malaro. There is some great sections on gifts tot
he museum for both related and unrelated activities.

Sincerely,
Tracie Evans
