Collections and Research | Database Assistant, Anthropology

Department: Anthropology
1 Full Time Position (35 hours/week) for 9 months
Job Description

The Anthropology department has a set of artifact data and supporting
multimedia files (images, audio, etc.) that need to be migrated to the
EMu, the new collections management applications. The data models are
different and there are many inconsistencies that need to be addressed
in mapping the data to the new schema. An acceptable solution needs to
be worked out with Anthropology content experts to address each
inconsistency, thus facilitating a smooth migration.

Job Duties

Responsibilities include:

   * Working with Anthropology staff and the Collections Databse
Architect to prepare the Anthropology FileMaker data for migration to
EMu using the most efficient strategy.
   * Becoming closely familiar with the current data model and
developing mapping table of where all the fields go in EMu. This
involves developing a base EMu table to support data mapping and
migration in Access and developing mapping queries to put the right
data into the right fields, from FileMaker to Access.
   * Developing strategies to prepare the data so that it is
consistent, and mapped into the Access table fields that require no
transformations in order to get into EMu. The approach is one table
per module, and so that all Anthropology data must find a home in the
new schema.
   * Working closely with Anthropology staff to figure out difficult
data inconsistencies, and clean data to those decisions.
   * Writing help text for every field being mapped to in EMu.
   * Finding and correcting migration issues/errors.
   * Other work as assigned.

Qualifications

   * Must have practical working knowledge of FileMaker
   * Microsoft Access and Excel, and be familiar with SQL, data
models, and data architectures.
   * Degree in Anthropology or a closely related area or have recent
experience in Anthropology collections management.
   * Demonstrate a passion for detail.
   * Be able to work closely and effectively in a team.
   * Be punctual and able to stick to a deadline.
