David E. Haberstich compressed these thoughts into the cyber mist:

As confusing as it is to have lengthy scrolls through line after line of
quoted material, it can also sometimes be confusing to read a reply that
has no reference at all to the original posting.  In either case, it
makes sense to quote only an essential line or sentence from the whole to
which you are responding, giving the reader a clue to thread continuity
and development without overwhelming them with several generations of
quoted responses.
