This question was posted on the archives listserv a few years ago.
Someone recommended chopping all the heads off, and someone else
recommended removing all the matches. No one advised keeping them in
the collection with the matches intact. At the historical society where
I also serve as archivist, we received a matchbook cover collection, but
all the matches were already gone.

Since I don't have a sprinkler in my building, I very reluctantly
chopped off the heads of the WW II era matchbook I just came across,
although all my instincts told me not to do it. If someone wants to do
research someday in the construction of the heads of matches during WW
II, they won't be able to come to me.

Subject: matches in the collection

Hello,

What precautions -- if any -- should we take with
matchbooks, matchboxes, etc. in the collection?

Thanks,
Kim Kenney
