Christine,

We had a feasibility study done a few years ago for a new museum here.
These are some of the questions that we had considered. Identity formation
and coordination at other major attractions, locational and site evaluation
(vehicular and pedestrian flow/access issues, arriving, signage, parking,
visitor orientation), program and building design (food service, attendance
based physical planning parameters, ability to accomodate public and private
special events, wayfinding and orientation, changing exhibits), marketing
(quantify marketing budget, image recommendations, marketing pitfalls and
opportunities, opportunities analysis (visitation levels, visitor
characteristics, operating characteristics, other area attractions
(competition and benefits), prosopective partner interests, economic impact
analysis.

This is a very brief (and not fully complete) list of some of the issues we
thought about. We also interviewed area residents on interest. As far as
what it entails. Looking at existing information at the institution, doing
case studies of other like institutions, doing case studies of other
institutions in the area the museum is proposed, reviewing nation, state,
and local records for information.

You will need to hire a professional that does this type of work. It is
very important to get someone that is very highly recommended. They will
know can help you with question formation as well as decision on
methodologies. The committee on audiecne research and evaluation through
aam has a list of consultants in the field. Also, the Visitor Studies
Association is also a good resource. You can find them on the web. If you
have any questions feel free to contact me.

Subject: feasibility study

I am part of a committee forming in Sturgeon Bay to look at starting a
children's museum. We are interested in conducting a feasibility study to
look at how much support we have from the community and whether our idea
should be formed. I am interested in finding out about feasibility studies.
What kinds of questions are usually asked in feasibility studies? What is
usually involved? What types of methods are usually used? Does anyone have
a copy of a feasibility study that they can release to our committee so we
know what maybe involved? Can other organizations in our similar situation
share their experiences of feasibility studies?

I would appreciate any help you can give.

thank you.
Christine Randall
