There are two paid summer internship positions available working on the 2nd Nature partnership program with the Latin American Youth Center Art + Media House and the National Park Service in Washington, DC. Background on 2nd Nature:

        2nd Nature; Inspiring Creativity Through the Natural Environment is an innovative new urban youth and community engagement partnership in Washington, D.C. between the National Park Service (NPS), National Capital Region (NCR) parks and the Latin American Youth Center’s (LAYC) Art + Media House.  During its pilot in summer 2010, 45 Washington, DC urban youth discovered and gained an appreciation for the national parks in their own city, created powerful art inspired by nature, and along the way, discovered more about themselves.
2nd Nature is designed to pair the existing LAYC Art + Media House summer art program with NPS experiences.  The theme for 2012 is “RACE” Thirty to forty diverse youth, ages 14-21, will spend six weeks during the 2012 summer learning skills in different art tracks (performance ( poetry/spoken word/song writing), printmaking, digital storytelling, and  graffiti/stenciling).  Art instructors will use the nearby national parks as spaces to conduct art lessons for the youth.   Youth will also discover the opportunities national parks offer and have fun, recreational visits which also help them connect with the “RACE”theme.  The youth will take multiple day trips as well as one, two day overnight camping trip to Catoctin Mountain Park.  Throughout the summer the youth will participate in facilitated discussions celebrating race in their art tracks, as a group, and during their visits to national parks.
The 2nd Nature youth artists will produce art tied to the “RACE” theme and inspired by their national park experiences over the summer.  The youth’s art will be shared with their community through a corner gallery in the heart of the Columbia Heights neighborhood and through multiple art exhibitions.


Ideal Candidate:

College and graduate students familiar with the Washington, D.C. area skilled at working with andbeing
a mentor to youth (age 14-21 years), interest and skill in graphic design, experience planning and
creating gallery exhibitions with youth and youth generated art, a team player, enjoy outdoor recreation
activities and visiting national parks. Successful candidates are typically motivated self-starters with a
passion for guiding and inspiring environmental stewardship in others.

Due to the high-energy nature of this program, the successful candidate will be flexible, have strong
facilitation (communication and listening) and organizational skills, and a proven track record of
meeting deadlines. This position requires that the candidate display professionalism, independent
judgement, and be able to listen to constructive feedback by the LAYC staff. Notonly should the
candidate love working with youth, but ideally they will also have demonstrated experience doing so.
The candidate must be open to taking part in various types ofrecreation (biking, hiking, camping,
kayaking, etc.) in the outdoors and with youth.  The program runs inside and outside, rain or shine, so
he/she must be willing and able to work outside in all types of weather.  The candidate should also be
familiar with healthy food options recycling, and composting.

Work Environment:

The Community Production Intern will share office space at the LAYC Art + Media House and will be a
part of the 2nd Nature Team, reporting both to LAYC and NPS staff.  The Intern will be in charge of the
summer exhibition (with youth generated art) and community gallery installations with youth
assistance.   The Intern will seek approval from LAYC staff before moving ahead with the various stages
of exhibit development and make sure that the exhibition is meeting base guidelines from donors and
the National Park Service (in relation to appropriate language, etc.).

Job Responsibilities:

This is a hands-on, 8-week paid internship (5 days a week, Monday-Friday), from June 13, 2012– Aug. 7, 2012from 10:30 AM-6 PM to support the partnership program, 2nd Nature; Inspiring Creativity Through the Natural Environment. Duties Include:
•       Participate and help plan the youth’s orientation week (activities and schedule) – first week of the program.
•       Assist art instructors in developing and leading presentations on artists related to theme in their medium and artists connected with national parks (once a week per medium).
•       Lead workshops for youth on how to install galleries (planning, supplies needed, layout of the space, execution, etc.).
•       Set and keep exhibit production schedule and coordinate with art instructors during the end of day meetings.  Lead the production team to design and install the Corner Gallery (from week one); run production meetings in the morning daily.Identify and set the Fall 2012-Spring 2013 exhibition tour schedule.
•       Graphic design skills to handle print production for exhibitions; handle creation of banner, invite, program booklet, and exhibit signage and promotion.
•       Develop interactives and other fun activities during free time in the gallery space during the summer related to NPS, LAYC, the theme, and creating the final community exhibitions (to include a leading a youth generated community action plan related to theme).
•       Assist LAYC staff with evaluation and data entry overall for the program.
•       Help with supplying information for the final binders (RACE curriculum from summer) for NPS and LAYC capturing everyone’s (art instructors, etc.) daily and weekly lessons, descriptions of recreational activities and facilitated discussions, park field trip plans and logistics, summer schedule, evaluations, etc.
•       Participate in weekly evaluations of program as well as an overall final evaluation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You will be evaluated to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications required; and on the extent to which your application shows that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with this position as defined below:
1.      Describe yourexperience working with youth (ages 14-21).  What are some types of methods you use when working with them?
2.      Describe your experience with graphic design. If you have an online portfolio, please include the link to access it.
3.      What isyour experience curating community galleries/exhibitions with youth generated art and with the help of youth (creating the gallery installation)?
        Please provide specific examples as to how you met deadlines and worked with past supervisors.
4.      Share your experience facilitating activities and discussions “on the fly.”
5.      What is your knowledge of national parks in and around Washington, DC area?
6.      What is your experience communicating and creating programs with diverse youth?
7.      Provide an example of a time you worked on a team project and give examples of the techniques you used to ensure clear communication.  Were you able to
        meet your deadlines?
8.      Give examples of your experience using social media and other digital equipment for visual, aural, or written communication.

no trace principles, etc.

Work Environment:

The Outdoor Education Intern will share office space at the LAYC Art + Media House and will be a part of
the 2nd Nature Team, reporting both to LAYC and NPS staff.  The Intern will be planning and conducting
off-site trips to national parks with youth and reflecting on park visits with the youth and their art
instructors. Their work will conducted in the field a majority of the time in all weather conditions.

Job Responsibilities:

This is a hands-on, 8-week paid internship (5 days a week, Monday-Friday), from June 13, 2012– Aug. 7, 2012 from 10:30 AM-6 PM to support the partnership program, 2nd Nature; Inspiring Creativity Through the Natural Environment. Duties Include:
•       Edit and finalize the pre and post evaluation survey for the youth (get feedback from LAYC and NPS staff). Conduct the pre and post surveys with the youth, art instructors, etc.
•       Participate and help plan the youth’s orientation week (activities and schedule) – first week of the program.
•       Conduct a pre-trip presentation with youth before going on any day and/or overnight national park trips (brief orientation about the park that is presented in a fun and relevant way to the youth; includes length of time, agenda while there, food choices, etc.)
•       Lead person (setting and maintaining the group schedule with assigned people and planning the itinerary with art instructors and 2nd Nature planning team) for the two day overnight camping trip to Catoctin Mountain Park and for multiple day trips to national parks with separate art tracks and whole group.  This includes handling all logistics (calling park staff, confirming transportation, recreational activities, buying food (with help from other staff), gathering overnight camping and cooking items in advance, assigned cooking and cleaning teams, campfire activities and performances, art lessons, hikes/programs with park staff, etc.)
•       Knowledgeable and comfortable facilitating activities around the theme of RACE and its connection with the national parks (will have support from others with the theme). At a minimum of two times a week will lead a fun ice breaker/warm-up/energizer for each of the four art tracks (15-25 minutes) related to the theme (listen, answer questions for youth related to the theme).
•       Develop interactives and other fun activities during free time.  For example, an opinion column for discussion, hands-on activities, etc. in the gallery space during the summer related to NPS, LAYC, and the theme.
•       Work with youth to develop a NPS piece for final exhibit related to the theme directed by youth and with assistance from the exhibition intern.
•       Work with park ranger to connect community green space by LAYC with that of national parks.  When park ranger not at LAYC, will serve as the NPS expert for youth and aid art instructors in refreshing youths’ memories about trips to inspire their creative expression.
•       Compile final binders (RACE curriculum from summer) for NPS and LAYC capturing everyone’s (art instructors, etc.) daily and weekly lessons, descriptions of recreational activities and facilitated discussions, park field trip plans and logistics, summer schedule, evaluations, etc.
•       Lead two workshops for NPS staff on cultural competencies and best practices when working with youth.
•       Participate in weekly evaluations of program as well as an overall final evaluation.

4.       What is your knowledge of national parks in and around Washington, DC area?
