We have a friends group here at the Manassas Museum.  Because we are a City-run organization, they are very helpful to us in two ways.  They are the membership arm of the museum AND they raise money for us.  They are called the Manassas Museum Associates and are a private non-profit group.  There are really great benefits here.  They will pay for stuff that is not in our City funded budget (new podium, part time staff people, new lap top computer, a nice camera).  They also host all our parties so we can serve "adult beverages" since they are the hosts.  In addition, they make great ambassadors for the museum and many of them volunteer for special events.

Hello,

I'm with a small museum that has just opened up in April.  Right now we are funded by the local Tourism Council but we would like to expand our funding sources to beyond that.  I know that other museums and libraries use a "friends of..." organization that basically acts as the fundraising arm.  What do I need to do to get one started, without having it as a separate entity?  I realize the question is vague, but I'm not even sure where to start to ask more specific questions.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
