Spaces are still available for the following Distance Education
opportunities from SOLINET Preservation Services. Enjoy two-hour
discussions of Preservation topics in real time without stressing your
travel budget. Students enrolled in Library Science or Archives
programs may attend at half-price.

*****PRESERVATION AND SALVAGE OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS*****

Do you worry about the life expectancy of VCR tapes, CDs, and motion
pictures? Do you know what to do with audiovisual materials in the event
of a flood or pipe break? This web-based class offers preventative
preservation strategies and salvage options for these special formats
for staff who manage audiovisual collections in all types of libraries,
schools, and archives. In the event of a disaster, knowing the nature of
the materials and which formats are salvageable will help you set
recovery priorities. Topics include life expectancies of common media,
preservation methods for extending the life of AV materials, disaster
preparedness strategies, and elements of response and recovery. Basic
salvage techniques are outlined for the following types of formats:
computer magnetic media, sound and video tapes, CDs and CDROMs, LPs,
motion pictures, and microfilm. The two-hour lecture also incorporates a
discussion of recovery vendors and resources helpful to those working
with AV collections.

Intended Audience: This distance-learning opportunity is designed for
those in small institutions interested in applying for grant funding for
the first time, and anyone who seeks a greater understanding of the
grant funding process.

Location and Time: Real-time distance learning on the web, 2pm-4pm
Thursday, July 14th or Tuesday, August 9th.

Cost: $100 for all SOLINET members and $140 for non-members. Early bird
discounts and late fees may apply.

*****INTRODUCTION TO GRANTS FOR PRESERVATION******

Finding the funds for preservation projects in your institution can
often be a challenge. Fortunately there are outside sources of funding
available for preservation projects, if you know where to look and how
to apply for them. This two hour distance learning session is an
introduction to grant funding and the process of writing a grant
proposal. Topics covered include: types of grants, preparing to apply,
elements of a grant proposal, tips on grant administration, outcome
measurement, and a brief overview of the most common grants awarded to
archives, libraries, and other cultural institutions in the United
States. Emphasis will be placed on grant funding for preservation
projects. Small institutions are encouraged to participate. A web-based
learning program allows for participants to interact with the instructor
and their peers in real time.

Intended Audience: This distance-learning opportunity is designed for
those in small institutions interested in applying for grant funding for
the first time, and anyone who seeks a greater understanding of the
grant funding process.

Location and Time: Real-time distance learning on the web, 2pm-4pm
Monday, August 8th or Thursday, September 22nd.

Cost: $100 for all SOLINET members and $140 for non-members. Early bird
discounts and late fees may apply.

*****CARING FOR SCRAPBOOKS*****

For many institutions, scrapbooks are one of the most problematic
formats in their collections. Common in the 19th and early 20th
century, scrapbooks are a unique record of individuals, families, or
organizations. Newspaper and magazine clippings, cards, other ephemera,
and photographs were adhered to poor quality paper in improper bindings,
making them a special challenge. This two-hour session will explore the
materials and techniques used, discuss the biggest preservation
challenges, and outline proper storage and handling to preserve them for
future generations. While the focus is on older scrapbook collections,
many of the same issues apply to scrapbooks being created today.

Intended Audience: The workshop is designed for those who have
scrapbooks in their collections and will be particularly significant for
those who are responsible for the care or use of these materials.

Location and Time: Real-time distance learning on the web, 2pm-4pm,
Thursday June 30th or Thursday, September 1st.

Cost: $100 for all SOLINET members and $140 for non-members. Early bird
discounts and late fees may apply.
