Subject: A copyright question.

I recently received a call from an artist who is creating a series of
works featuring wild life from all around the world. In the background
of each of her paintings she is planning to include ancient objects that
depict the same animals that will be featured in the foreground. She is
interested in doing a painting of the grizzly bear and raven and would
like to show part of a North-west Coast Haida totem pole in the
background. The pole she would like to show is in our museum's
collectoion. This is the first time that an artist has approached us
about using old pieces in a contemporary work. The copyright act does
not seem to cover this. { Have any of you had any similar experience - I
would appreciate some advice.
Thanks
