a designated airline carrier.

Conference Background
---------------------
The ED-MEDIA conference series originated as the International Conference on
Computers and Learning (ICCAL) which was held as a major international
symposium in Calgary, Canada (1987); Dallas, USA (1989); Hagen, Germany
(1990); and Wolfville, Canada (1992). ED-MEDIA conferences have been held
in Orlando, USA (1993); Vancouver, Canada (1994); Graz, Austria (1995);
and Boston, USA (1996). ED-MEDIA/ED-TELECOM 97 is the ninth in this series
of internationally respected meetings.

                        ----------------------
                        SUBMISSION INFORMATION
                        ----------------------

The Technical Program will include a wide range of interesting and useful
activities designed to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information.
These include keynote and invited talks, full and short paper
presentations, round tables, demonstrations, poster sessions, tutorials,
workshops, panels, and special interest group (SIG) discussions.

                      Information for Presenters
                      --------------------------
Details of presentation formats are given on the following pages.
The general principles applying to all are:
 - All communication will be with the contact presenter who is
responsible for communicating with co-presenters of that session.
 - All presenters must register and pay the registration fee (approximately
    $335 members, $375 non-members (US$)).
 - The conference will attempt to secure basic equipment needed for
presenters. However, when special equipment cannot be obtained,
presenters may need to bring or rent equipment. The name of a rental
    firm can be provided.

Full Papers (25 minutes)
------------------------
Papers present reports of significant work or integrative reviews in
research, development, and applications related to educational multimedia
and hypermedia and telecommunications/distance education.

All presented papers will be considered by the Program Committee for Best
Paper Awards. There will also be an award for Best Student Paper.
(Therefore, please indicate if primary author is a full-time student).

Paper submission proposals must include:
 > full paper (4-8 pages).
 > cover page information (see below).

Short Papers (15 minutes)
-------------------------
Short papers are brief, more condensed presentations or work-in-progress
projects and will be published as 2 pages in the proceedings volume.

Short paper submission proposals must include:
 > extended abstract of at least 2-3 pages
 > cover page information (see below)

Panels (1.5 hours)
------------------
A panel offers an opportunity for 3-5 people (including the chair) to
present their views or results on a common theme, issue, or question.
Panels should cover timely topics related to the conference areas of
interest. Panel selection will be based on the importance, originality,
focus and timeliness of the topic; expertise of proposed panelists;
as well as the potential for informative (and even controversial)
discussion. A panel summary and position statements will be included in
the proceedings. Panels must allot at least 50% of the time for
interaction and discussion with the audience

Panel submission proposals must include:
 > a description of the panel topic, including why this topic is important
to ED-MEDIA Conference attendees; between 2 and 3 pages.
 >  a brief position statement and qualifications of each panelist;
    between 2 and 3 pages.
 > cover page information (see below).

Roundtables (30 minutes)
------------------------
Roundtable sessions allow maximum interaction in informal, small-group
discussions on a single topic and give first-time presenters an opportunity
to participate without writing a full, publishable paper. The format is
particularly appropriate for papers, projects, or work-in-progress that
encourage extensive discussion. Roundtable sessions do not involve a
formal presentation and are held concurrently 4-6 in each room.
Presenters are encouraged to bring copies of their work to share.

Roundtable submission proposals must include:
 > a 2-3 page written description of the discussion topic emphasizing
the problem or issue and why the work is important.
 > cover sheet information (see below).

Demonstrations/Posters (2 hours)
--------------------------------
Demonstration/Poster sessions enable researchers and non-commercial
developers to demonstrate and discuss their latest results and developments
in progress in order to gain feedback and to establish contact with similar
projects. Demonstration/Poster sessions do not involve a formal
presentation and will not be included in the proceedings.

There will be Best Demonstration/Poster awards for the most successful
presentations in this category.

Demonstration/Poster submission proposals must include:
 > a 2-3 page written description of the planned demonstration/poster
and should emphasize the problem, what was done, and why the work
    is important.
 > cover sheet information (see below).

Demonstration/Poster presenters will be required to arrange for their own
systems software and hardware. The Conference will provide a table, poster
board and electricity for each presenter.

Tutorials & Workshops (3 or 6 hours)
------------------------------------
Tutorials and Workshops are intended to enhance the skills and broaden the
perspective of their attendees. They should be designed to introduce a
rigorous framework for learning a new area or to provide advanced technical
training in an area. Submissions will be selected on the basis of the
instructors' qualifications for teaching the proposed tutorial or workshop
and their contribution to the overall conference program. Workshops differ
from tutorials by involving hands-on experience with hardware/software
provided.

Tutorial/Workshop submission proposals must include:
 > a clear description of the objectives
 > the intended audience (experience level and prerequisites)
 > the proposed length (3 hours or 6 hours)
 > a 200-word abstract
 > a 1-page topical outline of the content
 > a summary of the instructor's qualifications
 > cover sheet information (see below).

Special Interest Group (SIG) Discussions (1 hour):
-------------------------------------------------
To encourage informal interaction among individuals with common
interests, SIG discussion groups (called "Birds-of-a-Feather"
at previous ED-MEDIA conferences) will be based upon topic
proposals submitted under the Call for Papers.

SIG Discussion submission proposals must include:
 > 1-3 page written description of the discussion topic emphasizing
the problem or issue and why the work is important.
 > indication of whether you are willing to chair the discussion.
 > cover sheet information (see below)

                   General Submission Information
                   ------------------------------
Proposals may be submitted in either hard copy (send 5 copies or fax 1 copy)
or in electronic form. Electronic proposals in the form of URL addresses
or ASCII files (uncoded) are preferred. Submissions with figures should
be sent as either URL addresses or printed pages. It is suggested that
submitters first e-mail proposals to themselves to test readability on the
screen.

After acceptance, final versions of papers must be sent for publication
in photo-reproducible form according to specifications available upon
acceptance. Final papers sent as HTML, RTF, MS Word, or ASCII files will
also be published on a CD-ROM; MS Word or RTF formats are preferred for
text and GIF format for photos/figures.

Cover Page must include:
  > submission type (e.g. Full Paper)
  > submission title
  > topic area selected from the ED-MEDIA or ED-TELECOM topics list (above)
  > name, affiliation, address, phone numbers, and e-mail for each presenter
  > name of designated contact presenter.
  > AV equipment requested from the Conference (for Full & Short Papers,
Panels, and Tutorials/Workshops only; others must provide their own).

CALGARY, CANADA: Frontier City among Mountain Peaks
         ---------------------------------------------------

Big western skies above the snowcapped Canadian Rockies highlight the
city skyline of Calgary, site for the EDMEDIA/ED-TELECOM 97 Conference.

The region is spectacularly scenic! Calgary is just a short 1-hour drive
from the mountains of the Banff National Park. Throughout the region every
imaginable outdoor adventure is available from skiing to horseback riding,
and hiking to hot springs. Host to the Winter Olympics in 1988, Calgary is
making another bid for the games in 2005.

Calgarys International Jazz Festival begins two days after ED-MEDIA/
ED-TELECOM Conference. From June 21 to July 1, 1997. And if you can manage,
stick around in Calgary for a while yet. The city's premier annual draw,
the Calgary Stampede runs from July 4 - 13, 1997.

Within the city take advantage of Calgary's shopping, theatre, art galleries,
symphony, ballet, and opera. Calgary is blessed with an easy to use light
rail system, which links the university, downtown, and many other key city
neighborhoods and sites. Dining spans an incredible range including
authentic Chinese food served up in the citys Chinatown to world-famous
Alberta beef.

To explore all that Calgary and the region has to offer or to plan your
trip, call toll free 1-800-661-1678 or visit the Calgarys web page,
