Elements of art is always a good way to start with kids. Project MUSE from Harvard University provides fun ways to approach art as well.

The real key is to find a focus/subject and stick with it. Look at the art together and discuss it (kids doing most of the talking). Then think of a gallery actitivity that would build on that. Ideally the kids could then create.

For example - portraiture discussion followed by a portrait biography gallery activity. Then have kids do portraits of each other.
