The State of Nevada, Department of Cultural Affairs, is recruiting for the position of Administrator, Division of Museums and History.  The Administrator is responsible to the Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs for administrative oversight of the Division of Museums and History, one of four divisions within the Department.   

The Administrator is in the unclassified service of Nevada state government and serves at the pleasure of the Director.  The position pays $77,721 (as of 7/1/2003) based on retirement contributions paid by both the employee and employer.  An employer-paid contribution plan is available with a reduced gross salary.  Benefits include paid medical, dental, and vision care; life and disability insurance programs; eleven annual paid holidays; three weeks of annual leave; three weeks of sick leave; State retirement system; and a tax-sheltered deferred compensation plan.  State employees do not contribute to Social Security, but a Medicare deduction is required.  Long-term employees enjoy additional benefits.  

To qualify for appointment, applicants must have a degree in history or science and experience in public administration.  The successful candidate will have a comprehensive working knowledge of public museum administration and operations, strong written and verbal communication skills, and excellent organizational, planning, and public relations skills.  A strong proficiency in analysis and problem solving, the ability to develop teamwork, and keen interpersonal skills are important attributes.  

Responsibilities include oversight of the seven museum institutions within the Division, submission of their budgets, supervision of the museum directors in matters pertaining to general administration of the institutions, coordination of institutional requests for assistance from governmental sources, oversight of each institution’s public relations, planning and development of any new facilities for the division, and assisting the institutions in efforts to improve their services to the rural counties.  Additional responsibilities are detailed in Chapter 381 of the Nevada Revised Statutes.
