The Drawing Center Invites Applicants
for Its Rotational Internship Program

The Drawing Center is the only not-for-profit institution in the country to focus on the exhibition of drawings, both contemporary and historical. It was established in 1977 to provide opportunities for emerging and under-recognized artists; to demonstrate the significance and diversity of drawings throughout history; and to stimulate public dialogue on issues of art and culture. The Drawing Center is located in the historic SoHo district of New York City, known for its large number of art galleries, museums, and artists’ studios.

The Drawing Center’s Internship Program provides opportunities to acquire practical experience in the daily functions of a small art museum and exhibition space by rotating interns through several departments, based on the interests of the interns and the needs of the institution, utilizing their assistance in exhibition installations and de-installations, and training them in daily operating tasks. Areas of the museum are contemporary curation, development, education, historical curation, membership, operations, press and public relations, publications, registration, and the Viewing Program for emerging artists. While in the different departments, interns learn the responsibilities of the areas by working closely with staff members on projects that vary according to the special and ongoing needs of the areas as well as gain a broader sense of the holistic and integrated structure of a small art museum.

To complement these practical experiences, interns work on reflective exercises that deepen their thinking and develop larger questions about what they are learning and figuring out as well as participate in professional development activities that provide assistance and resources for the possibility of future employment and professional status in the visual arts.

Applicants to the Internship Program should be undergraduates, graduate students, or recently graduated students and should have completed at least one year of college. Interns may receive work-study payment or academic credit, or they may volunteer their time; a small stipend may be available for the summer session. They must commit to work a minimum of fifteen hours each week, attend opening receptions for major exhibitions, and assist with at least one special event each month during the duration of the internship. Internships run for approximately three months; our summer session runs from May to July, our fall session runs from September to December, and our winter/spring session runs from January to April. In some circumstances, interns may be able to continue for subsequent sessions.

To apply, please contact us at The Drawing Center at 212-219-2166, extension 119 or [log in to unmask], to request an application or go to our website at www.drawingcenter.org to download an application. The deadline for our summer session is April 15, the deadline for our fall session is August 15, and the deadline for our winter/spring session has been extended to January 6.
