Thank you, Jill. That would be impressive. I've participated in a couple of NAGPRA returns. At another museum we served as the loanee until the NAGPRA paperwork was complete. I was invited to the celebration when the items were finally returned to the clan. It is emotional and heartwarming.

 Hi Jerrie,
I am late to this but I wanted to say that I
 admire you for your decision
 to make human
beings, and their dignity, a priority in your professional
 work.

 I wanted to tell you
about an experience I had that I thought of while reading
 your reply today.

 While I
served as the ED at the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, NM,
we had several unusual things happen, that prompted a
discussion about how uneasy/difficult/ugly the museum
atmosphere was.   Kathleen (my assistant who was
also from Taos Pueblo), made the arrangements for a blessing
of the Museum.  An elder from the Pueblo, along with a
priest from one of the churches, came to the Museum and
went, room by room, to speak and participate in actions to
help with the "unsettled-ness" there. Observing
this was one of the most incredible experiences of my
personal and professional life, and, set the stage for
demonstrating that we wanted to be responsive and sensitive
 to cultural concerns.

 While
board members as a whole may not have understood, or
appreciated what was done, it was the absolute right thing
 to do.
I want to send my best wishes to you
 in all of your efforts....

 Jill

investigators use the museum - decision

It's been a while but I decided to thank
again those who commented on and off-List. I read the
comments over carefully, thought about conversations I had
with Tlingit friends and colleagues when I lived in Haines
Alaska, and discussed the issue extensively with the
 museum's curator/archaeologist. I decided to not allow
investigations at Lost City Museum. The building was
constructed on one of the excavation sites. There were
houses and burials here. The policy that will probably be
fleshed out a little as I complete the policies for use of
the museum is: In order to maintain respect for those who
lived and died on this site and for their descendants,
paranormal investigations will not be allowed.
