Hi, Megan--

The best way to learn RE is hands-on.  There is such a steep learning curve 
that many users attend a 2-day training in South Carolina.  So having 
attended the training and actually having USED it on the job are really 
different in terms of experience.  Blackbaud is buying up many of its 
competitors, but it flagship product is still more than what some 
organizations need.  By "more," I mean in terms of cost, power and learning 
curve.

I think another way to demonstrate your suitability for a position is to 
explore some of the simpler prospect management systems and understand 
their elements.  Then it will simply be a matter of transferring and 
fine-tuning that knowledge for RE.  When I was hiring folks, if they said 
something like, "I've never used Raisers Edge but I do have experience with 
Millennium" (or GiftMaker, or Paradigm, or whatever) then I knew they could 
learn the specifics since they understood the concept.  If you have no 
experience at all with prospect management or tracking systems, begin with 
something very basic like eBase, which you can download for free.
