I am forwarding this reply from a botanist on the staff here
at the New York Botanical Garden who has been using GPS in
          his field work.

Hi Eric: The GPS unit I've been using is a GARMIN GPS 75 and will capture
either lat./long. or UTM's depending on how you set it up. Whether one set of
measurements is any better than the other, I don't know. Some topo maps I've
been using in Costa Rica don't show UTM's, but they do have the lats/longs. Is
this any help?

If you want to discuss it in more detail, email me off the list, and I
will forward the email address of this botanist. I am
reluctant to put this person's name on a public posting,
since I'm not sure that he would welcome alot of inquiries.
