I just got a wonderful mailing from the Lincoln Park Zoo here in Chicago
that leads with...

WHO on earth would pay to join a free Zoo?!
It then goes on to list a number of answers, including
"People like you -- who know what it takes to keep us free. Lincoln Park
Zoo is one of the last free zoos in a major Ameircan city - and the last
free major cultural institution in Chicago. Offering the best at no cost
means we depend on the support of people like you. Whn you become a member
of Lincoln Park Zoo, you help us remain free, open and astounding ...365
days a year"

And they have over 19,000 members, adding 2000 in the last year alone.
And don't seem to be terribly concerned about people not coming because it's
free and therefore not worth very much.

(which really does have a suggested donation and hopes to stay that way)
