Recent discoveries to be presented at the first International Bosch Symposium

Jheronimus Bosch revealed? The painter and his world.

For the first time, experts from all over the world will discuss the medieval painter Jheronimus van Aken, otherwise known as Hieronymus Bosch, at the International Symposium Jheronimus Bosch revealed? The painter and his world. At this symposium, which will be held in Rotterdam and 's-Hertogenbosch from 5 to 7 November 2001, scholars will present new findings from art-historical and archival research on Hieronymus Bosch and his time. The symposium will take place concurrently with the exhibition devoted to many of Bosch's works at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. It is heralded as one of the special events of the 'Hieronymus Bosch Year, 2001', announced by 's-Hertogenbosch, the town where this renowned painter lived. The symposium is being organised jointly by the Municipal Archives of 's-Hertogenbosch, the University of Nijmegen and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Recent discoveries
Only about twenty paintings are accepted as works by Hieronymus Bosch. These are found in important museums throughout the world, and have been on loan to the show in Rotterdam since 1 September 2001. Details about the master's life and work are scarce, however, recent research has uncovered a great deal of new information on Bosch's paintings. These discoveries, together with recently unearthed archival material relating to his life and work will be presented for the first time at the symposium.

Bosch experts
Participating lecturers include Prof. Dr. Jos Koldeweij and other experts who organised the Rotterdam exhibition, as well as international art historians such as Prof. Dr. Gerd Unverfehrt (Göttingen, Germany), Prof. Dr. Fritz Koreny (Vienna, Austria), Dr. Eric de Bruyn (Brussels, Belgium), Prof. Dr. Reindert Falkenburg (Berkeley CA, USA) and Dr. Roger Marijnissen (Brussels, Belgium). The symposium programme includes visits to the exhibition in Rotterdam and the city of 's-Hertogenbosch, special concerts presenting music from Bosch's time, dinners, etc. The registration fee is NLG 350.00 (Euro 160.00). For additional information about the symposium and requests for the registration form, please visit the following website: www.jeroenboschjaar.nl/congres (information in English).
