Dear Elisabeth,
this comment is by no means biased. I do absolutely not agree with your opinion that museum professionals should spent their time on any subjects visitors might be interested in. I would go even so far to say it's a wast of time. It is my strong opinion that interpretation work should start with museum objects and their original context and that interpretation work should connect the object of the past and present with the visitors present and future.
For those believing in ghosts, why not arranging an exhibition of original ghosts?:-)
But - to become more serious: Since quite a while ICOM is treating the subject of immaterial culture. As in christian faith, ghost-believing people (or cultures)have left in fact lots of objects somehow connected with their belief which can be shown on an exhibition. In my eyes, this would be the only exemption from (not only my) idea of museum interpretation.
