Good point, Dave!  One also probably can get neutral density film (grey)
that could be wrapped over the bulb to cut output.  There may be pre-made
sleeves available for this purpose.  However, I would have a couple of
questions with either of these solutions to lower output.  First, what
affect would it have on the color of the light?  I would imagine it would
lower the CRI?  Second, would heat retention in the bulb increase, since the
less light is escaping?  Would this shorten the life of the bulb, cause
premature color shift, or other concerns?  I'd love to hear opinions on
these issues.

Dear Colleagues,
A trick I learned back in my preparator days to diminish the output of a
bulb
when you can't alter the distance is to dust the bulb with a little black
spray-
paint.  Then check it with your light meter.  If it is still too high- dust
it with a
little more paint.  It works!
