The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer the following 3-day workshop course for professionals in museums, science, heritage and cultural centres, management planning and related organizations .

TIMELINESS: A consideration of the role of museums in current issues

As museums seek to be more broadly relevant to communities, our capacity to respond to contemporary events and issues in a "timely" manner raises fascinating, often challenging, questions:
        * What pressures encourage museums to take on greater responsibility to respond to and reflect on contemporary issues? What are the benefits? What are the pitfalls?
        * When is it appropriate to be "timely" in the museum context? Does this differ from one museum to another?
        * What stresses accompany efforts to sustain timely responses to emergent issues?
        * What can museums learn from the media and other groups that hold timeliness as a core value? How can they partner?
        * How can/should organizational mission, structure, and skill sets change to support a mandate for contemporary responsibility?
        * How does timeliness integrate with "relevance" and "civic engagement" in the museum lexicon?
        * Are there museums that effectively include contemporary responsibility in their mandate?

This three-day workshop/retreat/think-tank/gathering provides an opportunity for senior museum managers to consider these timely questions in the context of their own institutions and communities. Join colleagues and resource people in a thought-provoking and memorable setting to analyze the issues, explore factors for success, and develop strategies to strengthen your museum's capacity to be timely.
