Hello Belinda!
What I know about "L'Alliance Française" is that it is a French cultural
center, where you will find a lot of diverse information (such as contacts,
talks and concerts), located in several cities of Canada (there is for
example one in Vancouver).
My experience as an ESL student at UBC is that I learned a lot being
immersed in an English speaking world. I am still working at it though! You
will certainly be able to learn the basics quickly with a good program. Get
used to speak even unperfect French, this is the first step: overcome
"fear".
Hope it helps somewhat...
Sophie
