Curator of Arts Education 

Responsible for supervising the Rapid City Arts Council's Arts Education programs, primarily at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, SD.  This position works in partnership with staff, interns, art teachers and volunteers to design, implement and promote arts education programs which increase people’s creative-thinking and problem-solving abilities and add to the quality of life in our region. 

This program was formerly exclusively visual arts-based, but will expand to offer classes and experiences in other disciplines (The administration of this program does not require the successful candidate to be proficient in multiple art forms).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

*        Design arts education opportunities which increase people’s creative-thinking and problem-solving abilities and add to the quality of life in our region.

*       Classes, summer camps, middle/high school art exhibits/ 3rd grade tours/school tours/ children’s gallery activity bags & schedule / Saturday Art Adventures.

*       Work closely with staff to integrate exhibition themes into education efforts.

*       Use state-of-the-art education standards to guide curriculum development.

*       Work closely with communications staff to promote classes.

*       Supervise implementation of education programs and schedule, including supervision of teaching staff.

*       Survey participants for satisfaction and input.

*       Monitor department finances and assists in budget preparation, monitoring & reporting.

*       Coordinate some Education Programming in Collaboration with RCAC Exhibitions and Programs at the Dahl

*        School/teacher outreach.

*        Head-up middle and high school exhibit efforts.

*        Design Dahl-in-the-Classroom curriculum, advertise program, recruit and train academic enrichment volunteers and teach in program as necessary.

 *        Create lesson plans for 2-3 exhibits annually according to state standards for use by teachers in classrooms and make available on the internet.

 *        Compile and publicize resources for students and local teachers made available on the internet.

Additional duties include:

*         Recognize volunteers and program funders

*        Support on other department initiatives, programs and fundraisers as requested and able to do so

QUALIFICATIONS

While a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major work in Art History, Art Education or a closely related field is preferred, any combination of education and life experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities qualifies a person for this position. 

*         Experience with teaching and art education initiatives. 

*         Demonstrated success in managing projects and working successfully with volunteers and patrons. 

*         Passion for serving children, the public and the belief that art can transform lives. The successful candidate should possess strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with the Executive Director, board members, all levels of Rapid City Arts Council personnel and the general public in a positive and cooperative manner.
