Dear Anne Baker,

I would also be very interested in the results of your question to teh Museum List as I am involved in a legal research on databases containing visual material. In this research European protection of databases will be compared to the protection offered in the US to databases containing visual material.

Interesting questions would be for instance:
- Does a museum have different prices if the photo they supply is for commercial use (e.g. in databases like an encyclopedia on CD-Rom) or if it is for study or scientific publication purposes?
- Does the museum refer the applicant to the photographer to clear his copyright, or is the museum copyrightholder of the photo? Or does the museum not claim copyright on photos of e.g. old master paintings.
- Do museums demand that the name of the photographer is mentioned?
- Do many museums have photo requests settled by commercial corporations like Corbis, who also clear the museums' copyrights?

With kind regards,
Annemarie Beunen
