If you ask the AAM for a museum definition, they provide the following,
noting that it was approved by the AAM Council in 1970 and reaffirmed in
1989:
A Museum is "an organized and permanent nonprofit institution,
essentially educational or aesthetic in purpose, with professional
staff, which owns and/or utilizes tangible objects, cares for them, and
exhibits them to the public on some regular schedule."
Regards,
CAW
