I had thought I would be happy in the Art field, pursued Art as an
undergraduate, but as things turned out, I was interested in working as a
designer, either in a gallery or a museum. I went through the master's
program at Cal State Fullerton in exhibition design, which also included
a museum studies certificate program. I did the required internship, and
was able to find an entry-level job as a collections assistant, then on
to collections associate and finally as assistant collections manager. I
then switched jobs to becoming an assistant curator, and a few years
later to curator. I've already discussed the wage thing recently, but
what has interesting is that 10 years ago I would've never dreamed, let
alone believe, that I would be doing what I am doing today.

At the time I graduated in the late 80's there were probably no more than
a dozen students, with about 2 or 3 (or sometimes just one) of us gaining
our degree. I've kept tabs of my graduating friends, and they all are
gainfully employed. I haven't heard of one leaving the museum field, so
I will say it was a good program, with people committed to staying in the
field. The CSUF program continues to attract students who are committed
to staying in the field. Good luck to them, and to all of us.

O
