Robin,

First, visit the Museum-L archive at
http://home.dc.lsoft.com/scripts/wa.exe?S1=museum-l. Questions like
yours come up a couple times a year -- and there if often extended
discussions about how to get a museum job. You will find lots of ideas
for ways to get your first museum job.

Second, there are *lots* of experienced people out there who have
trouble finding museum jobs. For the most part, when it comes to museum
work, supply exceeds demand. However, if you are persistent and willing
to expand your notion of what you are willing to do in a museum,
opportunities are available. When you are starting out, front line and
clerical positions are often easier to get then professional positions.
Once you get your foot in the door and demonstrate your capabilities, it
can be possible to work your way up. (For example, many years ago, I
took a clerk-typist job in the curatorial department of an historical
site. This eventually led to a collections management position.)

Third, you should be aware that museums don't pay well.

Fourth, museums can provide an exceptionally satisfying career. It was
worth the effort for me. It may be worth it to you. Good luck.
