A Workshop on Preservation Microfilming & Digital Imaging
of Paper-Based Materials


Digital technology is having a profound impact on the way institutions
provide access to information.  But is digitization a preservation strategy
as well? NEDCC s workshop series will address that question.

The workshop will explore two reformatting technologies: preservation
microfilming and digital imaging.  The similarities and marked differences
of the technologies will be compared and evaluated.  The faculty will
discuss lessons learned from preservation microfilming projects that can be
applied to digital imaging projects.

The workshop is designed to train project administration in institutions to
plan, implement, and manage reformatting projects.  Instruction will focus
on decision-making skills.  Compliance with national standards and RLG
guidelines for preservation microfilming will be emphasized and  best
practices  for digital projects will be discussed.  This workshop is NOT a
technician training program.  Rather, the program emphasizes the following:

7       Choosing an appropriate reformatting technology
7       Management objectives met through reformatting
7       Digital preservation
7       Microfilming technology and quality control
7       Digital imaging technology
7       Preservation metadata
