Hi Greg,
Alas, museums are not immune from existing laws in relation to what they
hold in their collections- in some cases no matter when these items were
first acquired.  Museums must abide by any state or federal laws regulating
firearms, antiquities, endangered species, narcotics and etc.  As
educational institutions we may not have to give these items up but in many
cases possession requires a permit.
For instance, a permit will be required to possess a bald eagle or feathers
if they were acquired post 1940.  Acquisition prior to 1940 does not
require a permit.
Possession of a golden eagle or feathers requires a permit if it was
acquired post 1962.
Automatic weapons- no matter when they were acquired require a permit.
