CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Next Generation
Museum Association of New York
Upstate History Alliance
New York Folklore Society
Annual Conference
April 24-26, 2005
Rochester, NY

The world did not come to an end at the new millennium, but did the 20th
century museum? There have been many changes in the world over the last few
years, and many organizations are struggling to find a new path in it. Is
attendance still the best measure of success? How do museums find their
place in busy school and family schedules? What role does tradition place
in changing museums and communities? How will new technologies change our
exhibitions and programs? How do we encourage diversity in museum staff,
volunteers and visitors? As the world changes at an even faster pace, so
will museums. At this year's conference we will be examining how museums
are keeping pace with changes in society, and what the future may hold for
museums and the communities they serve.

About the Conference
The MANY/UHA conference is the largest gathering of museum professionals and
volunteers in the state. Each year it brings together a diverse array of
individuals from all types and sizes of museums, historical societies and
other cultural institutions. We are pleased to be holding this year's
conference in Rochester, home to a large number of exciting museums,
including our main host, the Rochester Museum and Science Center. This
year, we're also joined by a new partner, the New York Folklore Society, and
the new perspectives its constituency will bring.

While we welcome standard presentation/panel format session proposals, we
hope you will explore using interactive formats such as roundtable
discussions, debates or critiques. Sessions may be practical or theoretical
in nature. Do not be afraid to partner different or opposing
approaches/solutions to an issue in the same session. Don't want to submit
a proposal? We also welcome suggestions for topics you would like to see
covered at the conference.

Submitting a Proposal
The deadline for session proposals is November 1, 2004. A session proposal
form can be found on the UHA website, www.upstatehistory.org. We prefer to
receive proposals electronically at [log in to unmask] You may also
mail your proposal, postmarked by October 8, to UHA, 11 Ford Avenue,
Oneonta, NY 13820. Proposals will be reviewed by the program committee and
program decisions will be completed by January, 2005.
