I had a graduate intern stay with me for three months in LA, and she came
without a car. She rode the bus to work at the Getty. It took more than an
hour each way, and it's about an eight mile ride from my apartment. One night
she got home at 11 o'clock! After about a month, she went to Rent-A-Wreck and
did just that for her last eight weeks. Then she could go out with the other
interns and have a life outside of the bus route.

When I lived in DC, I walked to work, and rode the Metro. When I got to LA,
the first thing I had to do was get a car to get to work and the grocery store
and anywhere outside of a two mile radius. This town makes having an auto a
necessity.
