         The Valentine Museum seeks a curator for its over one million
objects, including decorative arts, domestic and industrial artifacts,
paintings, prints and engravings, as well as the historic 1812 Wickham
House.  Applicant should have a broad background in American history and
material culture, with a focus on urban and/or Southern history.  Successful
record of collections development, originating and mounting permanent and
changing exhibitions, research and publications. Familiarity with automated
collections management systems and budget management, both departmental and
project.  Master's degree and at least five years' relevant experience
desired; Ph.D. preferred.  Reports to museum director; supervises part-time
registrar.  Works as part of collections team with curator of costumes and
textiles and supervisor of reference services, as well as with other members
of small professional staff.
         The Valentine Museum collects, preserves and interprets the
materials of the life and history of Richmond, Virginia, where it is
centrally located in an active downtown setting.
