Check out the Delaware Art Museum's Red Apple Fund. It is a separate fund established by the museum to help schools afford transportation, and has been quite successful if I remember correctly.

The Living Heritage Museum uses two grants to reimburse costs of transportation and buses for school field trips.

"Any school with 25 percent or more of its students receiving free or reduced-price meals is eligible for the subsidy. The McMinn County Living Heritage Museum will subsidize up to $150 per bus trip, with each school limited to a $300 subsidy. Grants to eligible schools will be awarded on a first-application-received basis and will be available until the subsidy fund is depleted. In addition, the Museum will continue to provide free guided tours of museum exhibits if a teacher requests guides in advance. The LHM does not charge tour fees to the McMinn County and Athens City K-12 schools, but teachers are asked to call and schedule tours."

Hope this helps,

Hello

We offer bus stipends and on occasion are able to provide full bus scholarships. We search out grants and sponsors to be able to support this program. I have heard from the school community that the bus cost is the most prohibitive aspect of a field trip for classrooms. We offer our stipends to schools that are 70% or more free and reduced lunch.

Hi Christina,

We reimburse bus costs for field trips, but schools must:
A) Demonstrate financial need through a brief application process
B) complete a follow up project of some sort that demonstrates student learning following the trip. These include letters, montages, videos, websites, etc... Then we are able to share some of the projects with the donors and foundations who help support bus trips.

I'm happy to share our application if you like.

The Lenawee County Historical Museum offered such a program a few years ago. Our policy was to offer a flat fee per bus, which was calculated by the local ISD transportation supervisor to take the cost of running the bus + driver's pay. It was then a "first come, first served" type operation with a set budget (a donor had offered $1500 for the program). Not one school took us up on the offer.

Subject: Re: Bus reimbursement for field trips

A few years back the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, MA, obtained a $5,000 grant from Sovereign Bank to fund field trip buses from disadvantaged communities within the bank's service area. The communities were identified as those having median incomes at or below the poverty level using a gov't generated list. The bank also requested that qualifying schools be new to the museum so as to introduce new business to the ATHM. It took us a few years to use the money but the schools very much appreciated the funding and no doubt it made the trip possible for many of them. We paid whatever the buses cost - pre-approved, of course, so we could manage the budget. Schools attend field trips in groups of two classes or multiples of two because two classes fit on one bus. We recently ran into issues with field trips involving buses at all because now many schools require buses with bathrooms if you are traveling any distance (more expensive), and many districts require a nurse to travel with the group regardless - which pulls the nurse from the school, so schools have to cover this extra staffing. We had long known that bus costs kept students in their buildings.
