Hi-

I attended the University of York for my MA, which I
did in one year. I took out a loan to cover my tuition
and housing, which came to $14,000, significantly less
than getting an MA in the States.

I saved up a lot of money the summer before I went,
and managed to live off of my savings while there,
mostly because I had already paid for housing.

Some Americans did attempt to find work, but it was a
complicated, time consuming process to get approved
and shops didn't want to hire them and no one ended up
working. I only knew a few UK citizens who did work
while getting their MA, and that was doing work
directly related to the degree, such as working in the
archives or library.

It was a fantastic experience, and I don't regret
spending the money, but if you intend to do a PhD not
at them same institution, and you are concerned about
cost, it might be a better idea to save money by doing
your MA here.

If you have any questions about doing a MA abroad, I'd
be happy to answer them off-list too.

Good luck!

Hilary
