JOINT OREGON/WASHINGTON HERITAGE CONFERENCE

The first-ever joint Oregon/Washington Heritage Conference will be held in
Portland and Vancouver from September 28 to 30, 2000.  

The conference will begin on September 28 with workshops on Certified Local
Governments, Museum Collections Management, Fund-raising and Grant-writing,
and Partnership Opportunities.  A tour of the Historic Columbia River Highway,
a newly-designated National Historic Landmark will also be offered on the
28th.

September 29 will begin with a key note address by Tim Egan, Pacific Northwest
correspondent for the New York Times.  Throughout the remainder of the day,
sessions will be offered on topics such as aviation heritage, the Lewis &
Clark Bicentennial, timber heritage, Native American culture on the Columbia
River Plateau and maritime heritage.

Sessions offered on September 29 will include the African American
contribution to the Pacific Northwest, railroad heritage, agricultural
heritage, preserving building crafts, documentation of Pacific Northwest
history and heritage through film and video, and defining and measuring
communities' heritage health.  The final general session will be a discussion
of developing political strategies for funding heritage activities, with
Oregon and Washington legislators participating.

Throughout the conference receptions and other evening events will provide
opportunties to relax and socialize.

The conference is a joint event of the Oregon Heritage Commission and the
Heritage Resource Center, Washington State Historical Society.
