CONFERENCE: “LIVING HERITAGE FOREVER”
Museums and Heritage in a sustainable development context.

FIRST CIRCULAR - 19 JULY 2002

Dear Colleague
The Northern Flagship Institution and the South African Museums
Association Gauteng North will be hosting the “LIVING HERITAGE FOREVER”
conference as a parallel event for the Science at the Summit Conference
at the CSIR Conference Centre  in Pretoria, South Africa. The conference
will be on the 28th of August 2002. The conference will start at 08:30
until 16:00.

TITLE AND THEMES
The title for the parallel session is: “Living Heritage Forever”.
The themes identified for the Science at the Summit Conference, which is
being organized as a Science and Technology outreach event includes:
• The conclusion of a new social contract between science and society.
• Capacity building for narrowing the knowledge and technology divides.
• Beacons of hope (highlighting success stories where Science and
Technology projects have markedly enhanced sustainable development)
• Sustainable Science
• Youth outreach
• Monitoring and early warning systems

CONFERENCE FEE AND REGISTRATION
The Conference is free. Tea and coffee will be available for free. Every
person is responsible for their own meals. A restaurant will be
available at own cost.

All speakers and attendants are requirement to register at the link at
 http: //www.scienceforum.pretoria.co.za  The link will be available
from 30 July 2002. People can also contact Carina Malherbe for
registration and further information. Her contact details are at the end
of the document.

PROGRAMME
People who want to deliver a paper during the conference can contact
Carina Malherbe. There is still limited space so act quickly. The
programme is divided into three sessions. Each speaker is given 20
minutes to present their paper.  At the end of each session time is
allocated for questions from the floor.

All speakers have to  complete the attached form and send it to Carina
Malherbe on or before 15 August 2002.

Some of the papers that will be delivered:
Preserving our cultural and natural heritage for educational and
scientific purposes.
Dr Paul Bayliss (Acting CEO of the NFI and Manager of the Transvaal
Museum)
• The presentation will aim at illustrating that Museums not only
preserve, but conduct research that could be beneficial to the broader
public community.
• The educational role of museums - natural heritage and cultural
heritage.
• Illustrate the benefit of Museum s to the public and to create general
awareness and support for the core business of museums.
• Showcase the Discovery Centre as an example of an educational center.

Developing and managing the Tswaing Meteorite Crater: Showcasing
community partnerships in heritage conservation and ecotourism.
Dr Robert de Jong (Acting Manager Tswaing Crater)
• Tswaing as heritage conservation area with museum and other components

• Protecting the place
• Addressing the needs of visitors
• Addressing the needs of host and other communities
• Using appropriate materials and technologies
• Developing appropriate programmes and products

Traditional Beliefs and uses of Arachnids in an African Context.
Klaas Manamela (Transvaal Museum Preparator)
• Traditional beliefs and their effect on people.
• Traditional healers and witchdoctors
• Types of crafts
• Traditional uses of spiders

Indigenous Knowledge Systems: Monitoring and sustainability of Mopane
worm crop harvesting.
Dr Rob Toms (Transvaal Museum researcher)
• Indigenous knowledge and the life cycle of the Mopane worm
• Using indigenous knowledge to teach biological and economic principles
such as sustainable harvesting.

A glimpse of the earlier animals with the help of an electron
microscope.
Dr Bob Brain (Emeritus Curator - Transvaal Museum)
• In ancient limestones of southern Africa we are now finding exciting
500 - 600 million-year-old fossils of the earliest animals.
• The scanning electron microscope is a very useful tool in showing us
the surface detail and structure of these ancestral creatures, and
helping in the understanding of subsequent evolution.
ACCOMMODATION
 Every person is responsible for their own accommodation.

TRANSPORTATION
 Every person is responsible for their own transportation. Transport has
been arranged by the organizers of the Science at the Summit. The
