We have had this discussion over the last 30+ years. When I retired as a
curator I was and still am the only one licensed on the staff or now not on
the staff, to carry a side arm concealed...but then when I was a student at
the the U or R I had the license too (explosives also). My advice is never
to display a gun. If you do, it will let some idiot to chalange the guard
who is armed or at least in the appearance of being so. What if he says so
shoot me M.F.? The guard can not do it legally.. The best approach to a
problem is a properly dressed person ( maybe concealed armed) to ask "Can
I be of service?" Do NOT bring a confrontational situation if it can be
helped. Crazies, drug addicts and other nuts may challange a guard. If not
armed he is a dead duck. If overtly armed, and with the stupid Sullivan act
and a body of legislation in New York he is at a great disadvantage. He
will do his job and go to jail.
