JULIA, During the recession of the early 80s, a number of museums
experimented with professional staff doing double duty as security in the
galleries--the option was to do that or to close select galleries or
entire wings.
Jay Kamm, now Deputy Director, Wolfsonian Foundation, Miami
(Tel. 305.315.1001) tells of the time when all staff (including curators)
were assigned to four-hour shifts once each week in the galleries--he joked
that it was the first time some had to work _directly_ with the public. The
response, however, was varied: some embraced the opportunity, others
rile from the memory to this day. Best, JIM
